The newly created Ensemble Contemporâneo da Póvoa de Varzim (ECPV) symbolizes a huge step forward in the creation and affirmation of a new identity of FIMPV. It is the realization of an old dream and a vision on the part of its artistic director, Raúl da Costa.

The ECPV is composed almost entirely of young Portuguese musicians of exceptional caliber who occupy soloist positions in the main national orchestras such as the Gulbenkian Orchestra, Porto Symphony Orchestra Casa da Música and Algarve Symphony Orchestra, but also in important European orchestras such as the Phillarmonie de Paris, London Symphony Orchestra, Oslo Philharmonic and Beethoven Orchestra Bonn, just to name a few.

In the "core" of ECPV will also be present the talented triad of Poveiros musicians composed by Diana Sampaio (Orchestre Philarmonique de Monte-Carlo), Pedro Ribeiro (Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchester) and Márcia Sampaio (Neue Philarmonie Westfalen) who began their studies at the Music School of Póvoa de Varzim (EMPV) and, despite their youth, have already achieved successful careers.

The direction of the ECPV will be in charge of the maestro Nuno Coelho, guest conductor of the Gulbenkian Orchestra, whose artistic merit originated in 2022 his appointment as principal conductor of the orchestra of the principality of Asturias.

Although its genesis is aimed at a group specialized in the interpretation of new avant-garde music - ideal for the performance of new repertoire resulting from the International Composition Competition of Póvoa de Varzim (CICPV) - its name should be understood in a broader sense. The ECPV was not designed to include only contemporary music in its programs. Its designation originates in the actuality and scope of the repertoire that it intends to encompass. However, it will not only be restricted to the performance of the music of our time but also to the exploration of new interpretive and artistic frontiers, far beyond this one.
